Search our catalog, iBistro, for books on your topic. Remember that searching “Western Civilization” will not get you all of the books that are pertinent.

Books are shelved by Library of Congress call numbers (iBistro will tell you what the call number is for a particular book). Generally, the call numbers covering history begin as follows:

F1000-F1399 No. America (except US)

MCC Library has a collection of e-books relating to history. While they are included in iBistro, you can search them directly through Humanities e-Books.

Additional e-books can be found on the public web at e-books@Adelaide
or at Project Gutenberg (limit to English language and to an appropriate LoCC category, usually in the Ds). Additional books can be found through Google’s Book Search. (limit to “Full view” and “English” language). Please note that unlike the Humanities e-books, the majority of books found in the “free” public web collections are ones published prior to 1923.

Search for an overview of your topic by using Facts on File’s History Database Search. Along with encyclopedia entries, there is biographical information, primary sources, images and video clips.

For journal articles on your topic, search JSTOR (remember to limit to “Articles”) If you are searching for Book Reviews, limit to “Reviews”. Your search results will include appropriate images from ArtStor (click on the ArtStor tab at the top of the JSTOR search results). A new addition to ArtStor is the almost 1300 Virtual Reality panoramas of architectural sites in countries such as Italy, France, Germany and others.

Additional journal articles can be found using Academic Search Premier.

If you are researching an individual, be sure to check Biography Reference Bank for journal and magazine articles and suggested books.

Find contemporary articles for events after 1851 by using the Historical New York Times.

You might check how prices translate from past year’s to today’s dollars by using the Cost of Living Calculator. (only goes back to 1913).

Appropriate internet sources are listed on the Library’s Subject Guide-History website.

If MCC Library does not have what you need, we offer free Interlibrary Loan services. Covering over 20,000 libraries, our Interlibrary Loan system will try to find what you need at another library and ask that it be delivered here for you to use.

MCC Library has links to citation aids, both for MLA and APA. Of particular note is the OWL at Purdue.

FILM CRITICISM

Can’t find it here?
Check other iBistro libraries or WorldCat. The Library can try and get a copy for you through Interlibrary Loan.

Use iBistro to find out if MCC Library has the movie. (Search by Title of the movie – you may also find books about the movie).
Remember to search iBistro using the name of the director of the film, the film genre, and/or the principal actors.

TIP:In order to adequately search for reviews and criticism, be sure to find the names of the major actors, the director, producer, and the year the film was released. In addition, you may want to note the date of the VHS and/or DVD release.

Internet Movie Database
The most comprehensive of searchable online movie databases (now owned by Amazon.com). Some reviews are available, however, be aware that many are not written by professionals, rather, they are submitted by the general public.

CRITICISM and REVIEWS -What’s the difference?

While these two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a difference. Generally REVIEWS are written at the time the movie is first released, when the video or DVD is issued, or as part of a BEST FILMS or RECOMMENDED VIEWING list. Reviews tend to appear in newspapers and magazines.

CRITICISM can be done at any time after the film’s release. It involves a more studied and in-depth approach to the movie. Criticism is more likely to appear in professional magazines and journals. Please note that the study of films as a scholarly endeavor really began in the mid to late 1960’s.

Movie Review Query Engine
Can be used to locate movie reviews available on the general internet. Just be aware that many of the reviews listed are not necessarily by experts or professional movie reviewers. Some may be submitted by the general public.

The New York Times has just changed their policy about accessing articles on their website. It is still unclear how much you can get for free. You will have to register.

Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature is located by the current periodicals, bound indexes, and Art books. This is very good index to films in older periodicals that may not be in the online databases. Take a look in the index under “moving pictures“.

Contains reviews and criticism from 1896 – 1960. Many of the entries are reprinted in their entirety.
